SKU = Stock Keeping Unit A "SKU (or "Sku") is essentially a merchant offered product identification.  A SKU number should not be confused with a UPC Code (Universal Product Code) since a UPC Barcode is applied to products by the manufacturer.    A UPC can have multiple SKU's.  For example if the original price of an item is $2 and the price is lowered to $1, the Merchant can create a new SKU for each price for accounting purposes.  The SKU can include the barcode or model number of a product, or created however the Merchant wishes.   This way, if a product does not have a UPC code registered to it, a Merchant can still market and sell items simply by assigning a SKU to the inventory.
